In order to become more cost efficient, the Norwegian authorities initiated in the early ‘s a standardization project for the upstream oil and gas industry.
Materials Selection for Oil and Gas Production Systems – Use of ISO – OnePetro
One of the important products from the project was the NORSOK M standard which addresses the material selection for offshore production facilities. Example of limits for corrosion resistant alloys are maximum operating temperatures to avoid stress corrosion cracking in marine atmosphere, maximum operation temperature for seawater service, and utilization limits in order to prevent hydrogen induced stress cracking from cathodic protection. These limits are based on a combination of field experience and laboratory testing as well as the industry must incorporate certain conservatism in order to operate safely.
The technical justification for the limits are presented and discussed. The scope for this paper is to discuss recommended application limits for materials in specific environments given in international and national standards such as ISO 1 1 and NORSOK 2 M The scope for this standard is to provide guidance and requirements for material selection and corrosion protection for hydrocarbon production and process facilities and supporting systems.
The last edition of the standard has been modified to give additional requirements to ISO “Materials selection and corrosion control for oil and gas production systems”.
The ISO was published in September The purpose with this standard was to develop a standard on materials selection that should be a “Materials requirements standard” that should be used as general guidance on corrosion evaluations and materials selection for the standard types 2457 equipment and facilities. This allows the project to focus on the complex and project specific materials selections.
