Jun xokolov, Tosh rated it it was amazing. Ok, I published this. Without a doubt one of Frances’ great songwriters of all time – and of course, a fantastic recording artist. Where does one start with Gainsbourg Well, first of all this a short novel about an artist who has gas problems.

He farts at the worst times – and basically he consistently farts. The only saving grace he has is that he always has his dog around him, and wh Ok, I published this.

The only saving grace he has is that he always has his dog around him, and whenever he farts he blames the dog. The artist, due to his gas problems, uses that problem to make his art. What happens when he is cured???? A very funny novel, and that is why I published it. Also I think he’s one of the great cultural figures in France if not the world! Mar 10, Michael rated it liked it. Ridiculous, as I’d hope it would be.

Serge manages to bring together the two great defining cultural obsessions of the 5th Republic [on the assumption that Paris is now a semi-enthusiastic sector of la banlieue-Bruxelleoise]: Dec 12, Brent Legault rated it really liked it Recommends it for: I am normally put off by “bathroom humor”, written or spoken, and if I didn’t already know and love Gainsbourg before reading his book, I don’t know how I’d’ve received it.

It is unsettling to think that both he and Howard Stern had the idea for a farting superhero. Was it zeitgeist or did Stern get hold of this translation?

I doubt he read it in the original. A question for future research, perhaps. I read this years ago, in the shadow of a Parisian FNAC, back when my French was in its infancy I am normally put off by “bathroom humor”, written or spoken, and if I didn’t already know and love Gainsbourg before reading his book, I don’t know how I’d’ve received it.

Today, it writhes in a perpetual adolescence. Then, as now, I had to leap over a lot of the medical jargon and seek out the vulgar burlesque, of which there is plenty. Gainsbourg’s style is so dry, so subtle, so absurd. It is like his songs and his persona. There is a constant smirk in this novella and if you are in the right mood, there will be one on your face as well. It is funny and strange and I don’t think I will ever fully understand why he chose to write it.

But I’m glad that he did. A couple of points to, uh, poo poo. Arnold Krupp is xokolov as Arnold Drupp on page And I have to say that I was, at times, disconcerted by the unjustified type.

A curious editorial choice, but I’m sure Tosh has his reasons. But that’s the cool thing about Gainsbourg: Jan 19, Michelle sokklov it it was amazing Shelves: The world needs more books about farts. Evguenie Sokolov

He takes what is potentially a socially debilitating condition and uses it to his own advantage by producing art works that record the way in which his farts drive his hand across the various surfaces on which he chooses to record the gaseous spasms of his bowel tract.

By mercilessly riding out this quasi-materialist aesthetic, Sokolov becomes a famous artist. Read my full review here: Feb 16, Steve rated it it was ok. The concept of the book is great. Tragedy, art especially artfame, sex, love I love the book’s nihilistic humor and its jabs at the art world establishment. The existential gesture of Abstract Expressionism is replaced by noxious air, the spirit of Duchamp’s famous Fountain becomes a gaseous muse, and Pop Art is propelled by the same repetitive anal spurts.

At least not when compared to his music. Great joke, but great art? Aug 29, Anna rated it it was amazing.

Found this next to the toilet in my new house and wound up reading the entire thing in a succession of relatively short sittings and found it an enlighteningly ironic farce exposing the hypocrisy and repression, however un- or indeed, oppositely sexual, that was rampant in the insider art world culture of the modern painters of the midth.

I totally heart Serge Gainsbourg and am intrigued that this is his only real novel, although its length, sandwiched somewhere between an essay and a nove Found this next to the toilet in my new house and wound up reading the entire thing in a succession of relatively short sittings and found it an enlighteningly ironic farce exposing the hypocrisy and repression, however un- or indeed, oppositely sexual, that was rampant in the insider art world fvguenie of the veguenie painters of the midth.

I totally heart Serge Gainsbourg and am intrigued that this is his only real novel, although sokolof length, sandwiched somewhere between an essay and a novella, oddly enough weighs its cautionary tale about the desire for fame with a more profound and conclusive aura.

Super gross too, and has great lists of important art galleries and museums world wide. Gives the expression “artsy fartsy” a new depth of meaning. Jan 30, melanie berlin rated it really liked it.
