Achyut Purushottam Kanvinde —28 December was an Indian architect who worked in functionalist approaches with elements of Brutalist architecture.

He received the Padma Shri in He was born in Achare, in the Konkan region of Maharashtrain in a large family. His mother died when he was two and his father was an arts teacher in Mumbai. Kanvinde, influenced by his father, a portrait and landscape painter, took up art and graduated in architecture from Sir J. School kanvinds Arts, Mumbai in He was then sent by the Government of India to study at Harvard where he worked under Walter Gropius and was influenced by his thinking and teaching.

Some of his famous batchmates were Paul RudolphI. Pei and John Perkins. Tanuja and Murad Chowdhury. Kanvinde played with space and forms. He gave great importance to natural light. The form of the building is such that kanvindr problem of ventilation as well as excessive heat is beautifully solved. He championed the cause of vernacular architecture. He believed that values and historical influences contributed towards good architecture.

This, after all, is at the very core of his work. In India the search for a new architectural expression must continue — and this must go beyond the satisfaction of matter of fact functional needs. In my own case, I must acknowledge my tremendous debt to Gropius — it was he who really exposed me to kanvijde power of technology on the one hand and the psychological dimensions of spatial organisation on the other.

Actually my present concerns and realisations are all reflections of my earlier preoccupations: He believed that a grid of columns forming a matrix giving structural and spatial aspect would turn a design more sophisticated and faceted. He believed in the science of Vaastushastra. In England, the term was adopted by architects Alison. Concrete is used for its raw and unpretentious honesty, contrasting dramatically with the refined and ornamented buildings constructed in the elite Beaux-Arts style. Another common theme in Brutalist designs is the exposure of the buildings functions—ranging from their structure, from another perspective, the achut of the Hunstanton School included placing the facilitys water tank, normally a hidden service feature, in a prominent, visible tower. This style had a position in the architecture of European communist countries from the mids to the late s. In Czechoslovakia brutalism was presented as an attempt to create a national, John Andrewss government and institutional structures in Australia also exhibit the style.
